Football built my foundation. Mathematics gave me new purpose, direction, and a future I never saw coming.
Â
Before I even turned 16, I dreamed of representing Sri Lanka on the football field. By age 13, I earned the nickname “Slipper” at St. Peter’s College for precise sliding tackles. Playing for Saunders SC while still in middle school, I discovered how natural ability and gifted instinct could often overcome experience.
I was fortunate to be guided by two legendary coaches who represented Sri Lanka and later served as national selectors — Neville Abeygunawardena and P.D. Sirisena, the Godfather of Sri Lankan Football. Their mentorship shaped my resilience, discipline, and leadership both on and off the field.
Â
Alongside a teammate, I helped establish our school’s U‑16 football team. To balance academics, I stepped away from professional club football. With limited opportunities compared to cricket and rugby, I began rethinking my future in sports. At the same time, inspiring mathematics teachers at St. Peter’s College motivated me to aim for the University of Moratuwa. Through hard work and guidance, I became one of the top national scorers in A/L Mathematics and earned a government scholarship.
Â
With no professional pathway for football in Sri Lanka, I chose education. I carried my competitive spirit, discipline, and resilience from the field into academics, finding success and new purpose through mathematics and engineering.
Â
What I once lost as a dream became the strength I now use to guide my future. Football built my foundation, and mathematics gave me direction.
Â
I was honored to study engineering at Sri Lanka’s top-ranked institution, the University of Moratuwa. Beyond academics, I contributed significantly to the university’s sports achievements, representing in both football and rugby, and earning recognition for my athletic contributions.

Where Sri Lanka’s brightest mathematical minds come together to produce world-class engineers and architects — and where great athletes hone their sporting skills alongside academic excellence. This is where I transformed setbacks into success, especially as a football striker and a rugby field goal specialist.
At the University of Moratuwa (UOM), my true football journey came alive. Overlooked in high school as a midfielder controlling the game, I reinvented myself as a striker prioritizing victory over spectacle. With a singular focus on scoring and winning, I transformed into a match winner who made a real impact—but no national selectors were present at any of the university games, so this talent was largely overlooked and left undiscovered.
Supported by a committed coaching staff and surrounded by a driven squad, I became the university’s top goal scorer for four consecutive years, earned MVP honors in my freshman season, and captained the University of Moratuwa football team during my final year. Our team was one of the most unknown yet deadly squads in Sri Lankan university football. Some of the highlights included thrashing my former high school twice, 2–1 and 7–0, defending the Kothalawala Defence Academy team for four consecutive years, defeating the Sri Lanka High School Champion team 3–2 during my final year, and maintaining an unbeaten run against several professional clubs.
Our matches were intense battles against top universities, military academies, and professional clubs. While the wider football community missed out, a small group of passionate believers—professors, teammates, loyal fans, and our groundsman—witnessed moments of raw brilliance: bicycle kicks, scissor kicks, and long-range solo goals that lived in the memories of those present.
Though the dream of wearing the national jersey quietly slipped away due to limited scouting, academic commitments, and age, UOM became my proving ground. I earned the University of Moratuwa Sports Colors and the prestigious Sri Lanka University Sports Association (SLUSA) Award—prestigious national-level university honor recognizing my resilience and impact on the field.
My sporting journey didn’t end there.
Invited to join UOM’s rugby team as a placekicker—a specialist role they had long lacked—I embraced a new challenge. With no prior rugby experience, I adapted my soccer skills to the full-contact game, delivering precise field goals that helped lead the team to its first-ever rugby championship. We repeated the feat in my final year.
Competing alongside some of the country’s best young rugby talent, including youth internationals, I was honored with University Colors again and selected to SLUSA’s Best XV—a honor recognizing the top university rugby performers—purely for my exceptional kicking accuracy, especially in field goals.
UOM was where I turned setbacks into triumphs, found my place as a leader and scorer, and ignited a passion for sport that burned brighter than ever—both on the football pitch and the rugby field.
I hold three Master’s degrees — in Applied Mathematics, Aerospace Engineering, and Applied Statistics — from California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), along with a Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Moratuwa (UOM). This academic foundation has equipped me to contribute across advanced fields.
