🎯 When Education Outweighed the Dream

With no professional pathway for football in Sri Lanka, I chose education. I carried my competitive spirit, discipline, and resilience from the field into academics, finding success and new purpose through mathematics and engineering.

⚡ Early Passion for Football

Before I even turned 16, I dreamed of representing Sri Lanka on the football field. By age 13, I earned the nickname “Slipper” at St. Peter’s College, Sri Lanka for precise sliding tackles. Playing for Saunders SC while still in middle school, I discovered how natural ability and gifted instinct could often overcome experience.

🧑‍🏫 Mentorship and Growth

I was fortunate to be guided by two legendary coaches who represented Sri Lanka and later served as national coaches — Neville Abeygunawardena and P.D. Sirisena, the Godfather of Sri Lankan Football. Their mentorship shaped my resilience, discipline, and leadership both on and off the field.

📚 Academic Turning Point

Guided by dedicated and world-class Pure and Applied Mathematics teachers, my path shifted during high school — from pursuing professional football to excelling in Advanced Level Mathematics (A/L Math). I stepped away from club football to focus on academics, earning a government scholarship after scoring one of the highest national percentiles — a journey that led me to the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka’s top-ranked engineering university.

I was honored to study engineering at Sri Lanka’s top-ranked institution, the University of Moratuwa. Beyond academics, I contributed significantly to the university’s sports achievements, representing in both football and rugby, and earning recognition for my athletic contributions.

I hold three STEM Master’s degrees — in Applied Mathematics, Aerospace Engineering, and Applied Statistics — from California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), along with a Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Moratuwa (UOM).

⚽ Football Journey

Overlooked in the national junior selections despite being a standout midfielder, I reinvented myself at UOM as a striker focused purely on victory. With relentless drive and precision, I became the university’s top goal scorer for four consecutive years, earned MVP honors as a freshman, and captained the team in my senior year.

We built one of the most underrated yet dominant university football teams in Sri Lanka, defeating top professional clubs and maintaining an unbeaten record against Kotalawala Defence Academy for four straight years. Among our proudest moments were victories over my former high school and the reigning national high school champions — triumphs that elevated UOM’s football legacy.

Though university football often went unnoticed nationally, those seasons produced unforgettable moments — defined by teamwork, leadership, and resilience.

Invited to join UOM’s rugby team as a placekicker, I embraced the challenge of mastering a new sport. With no prior rugby experience, I adapted my football kicking technique and helped UOM capture its first-ever University Rugby Championship, followed by a successful title defense the next year.

For my contributions, I was honored with University of Moratuwa Sports Colors, the SLUSA Certificate of Honor, and selection to SLUSA’s Best XV, recognizing the top university rugby players in Sri Lanka.

A proud member of the 1959 Sri Lanka Youth National Football Team, his playing dreams were cut short by injury — but his passion for the game lived on through his writing. He shared his own ideas and reflections in articles such as “Pelé – Greatest World Cup Football Player” and “The Greatest Show on Earth,” which earned recognition from Pelé himself and the Santos Club. His love for football and his dedication to capturing its spirit continue to inspire me every day.
